The company anticipates approximately 7% of users, particularly those on Pro tiers, will now encounter session limits they previously did not.

The changes have elicited widespread negative reactions from the developer community. Users report immediate and drastic reductions in effective compute during the affected window; one Pro Max subscriber noted a workflow that typically consumed 10% of their 5-hour limit now exhausts 100%. Criticism is also heavily directed at Anthropic’s communication strategy: the announcement was made on Twitter by an individual developer relations employee, Thoric, hours after the new limits went live, rather than through official company channels or in-product notifications. The underlying cause is attributed to Anthropic’s struggle with unprecedented growth and a critical GPU scarcity, leading to internal pressure to reallocate compute resources, particularly prioritizing enterprise and API customers who offer immediate financial returns over subscription users and internal research.
