The discourse around Event-Driven Architecture (EDA) frequently sparks debate: is it genuinely necessary for modern applications, or an overengineered solution for simple CRUD operations? Despite its promotion across tech blogs and by senior engineers, many organizations, including a French startup processing just 10,000 orders monthly, are adopting complex patterns like Event Sourcing, often misunderstanding their fundamental purpose. Critics point to the irony of large monoliths handling ten times that traffic without such elaborate setups, highlighting a pervasive confusion regarding EDA’s core utility and specific benefits beyond perceived scalability.
The core of this confusion lies in distinguishing various applications of events. While EDA can offer scaling benefits through patterns like competing consumers, its primary value stems from decoupling responsibilities and providing temporal independence. Events, distinct from commands, serve as immutable facts that something has occurred, allowing independent system components to react without direct invocation.
