A recent critique by a prominent software developer asserts that Apple’s iOS ecosystem is profoundly impeding global software innovation, extending beyond iPhone users to the broader industry. The developer, initially an ardent iOS supporter, highlighted how Apple’s current approach contrasts sharply with Steve Jobs’s original vision for an open, web-centric platform for iPhone apps. The introduction of the App Store and its stringent policies, particularly the mandated 30% revenue share on digital goods and services, is cited as a primary inhibitor. This model, the developer argues, stifles diverse business models, makes certain categories like game streaming economically unviable, and forces developers into adopting Apple-centric features like ‘Sign in with Apple’ even when unsuited for their user base. Furthermore, concerns were raised regarding the App Store’s inconsistent review process, arbitrary rejections, and alleged inaction against predatory subscription scams targeting children, which reportedly contribute significantly to Apple’s revenue.

Beyond economic and policy hurdles, the developer experience on iOS faces severe technical and environmental limitations. Xcode, Apple’s integrated development environment, is criticized for its outdated architecture, stemming from a 25-year-old NeXTSTEP codebase, leading to pervasive issues such as frequent crashes, slow and non-deterministic builds, poor Git integration, and unreliable debugging tools.
